External social validation (wealth, fame, status, etc.) and external circumstances (job satisfaction, fulfilling romantic relationships) do not in themselves create a sense of meaning in life. Yes, they can give a temporary sense of satisfaction, but a lasting sense of life's meaning is more related to what is happening in the inner world (living according to a personal value system, being in relationships and striving for the development of consciousness).
Having a sense of meaning in life does not mean being in a constant state of joy, happiness or contentment. Life is inherently characterised by ups and downs, challenges and uncertainty. A sense of meaning arises when a person is able to find resilience, purpose and growth in the flow of experience (including the lows of life) rather than eternal well-being.
A sense of meaning in life does not come by itself - it requires active exploration, self-reflection, action, engagement and taking responsibility, not passive waiting. A sense of meaning in life comes from making conscious choices that are aligned with one's value system.
A sense of meaning in life is not a destination to be reached. It is a continuous process of exploration and discovery. Focusing on a sense of meaning in life as an achievement most often leads only to dissatisfaction and disappointment at unfulfilled expectations. Finding a sense of meaning in life is a journey that develops over time as people experience and make meaning of their experiences.
By becoming more aware of the nuances of life's sense of meaning, it is possible to develop a deeper sense of purpose, fulfilment and authenticity in one's life.
